August 22 - 26

Week 2: August 22 – 26

Reading
WOW! I’m so excited that our kids already love reading as much as I do. We are already enjoying our 30 minutes of reading a day. This is normally that we have to build stamina up for, but our kids look forward to reading time EVERY DAY! As we work on our reading skills, we’ve begun to discuss story structure. Including characters, setting, plot, and the problem & solution. Not surprisingly, the kids have a firm grasp of each of these. Now it’s time for us to start practicing putting these concepts into our writing.

Math
To start our math journey off, we’ve been reviewing some of the concepts from second grade. That way we have a firm foundation to build upon. We’ve been reviewing adding and subtracting strategies, and also place value (rounding, expanded form, standard form, word form, and greater than/less than). We will continue to review these concepts before we jump into multiplication.

Time Capsules
I enjoyed every watching the kids present their time capsules. It really gave the class and myself a change to get to know classmates better and what’s important to each of them.

Writing
We’ve spent time getting to know our writer’s notebooks and working on writing down our stories, thoughts, and ideas we have. Many of our kids struggle with what it means to “write”. Many of them prefer to have a writing prompt, but I’m working hard to build their confidence in relying on themselves for inspiration and courage to create a story of their own.

August 17 - 19

Week 1: August 17 – 19

WOW!! What a fantastic start to the year we’ve had! The kids and I are still getting to know each other and we’ve been engaging in lots of community building activities! We want to make sure that we’ve got a strong sense of family and community before we dive into our academics. I have such a good feeling about this school year now that I’ve met the kids and also you wonderful parents. It’s such a great feeling to have parents who are as involved and concerned as you all are.

Here’s a snippet of a view of what we did this week!
