Week 3 (September 1 -5)
We’ve had yet another great week of school! Students were so
excited to have their pictures taken on Friday; they were all smiles for the
camera!
Surprise Visitors
We’ve had two visitors in our
classroom this week. Camia, Seiease’s mom came to sit in on our class earlier
this week and Mrs. Griggs also came to visit. Many of you know Mrs. Griggs from
first grade because your child was in her class or because you’ve seen her
around. Well, on Thursday she came to visit our classroom and read the children
a wonderful read aloud entitled, How to Lose All Your Friends by Nancy
Carlson. All the kids enjoyed both the book and her presence in the class!
Reading
This week we have been working
on building our stamina for reading. We’ve discussed “just right books”, good
reading habits, and different reading techniques. Below is the “what to do
while reading” list that the class came up with. They really had some good
ideas.
We’ve also exchanged our
previous library books for a new set. This time students checked out two books
and they have a huge zip lock back to keep them in. Hopefully this will make it
easier for students to keep up with the books. This week they will also be
going to the media center where they will be allowed to check out books as
well.
Writing
We’ve been working really hard
on our acrostic poems and we hope to finish them up this coming week. Poetry
can sometimes be a hard concept to understand, but acrostic poems are very fun
and the kids have had a great time trying to figure out what they would like to
do for their name. One of the students said, “It is like trying to figure out a
puzzle!” They also had a good time helping me create one for my name as well.
We created this one as a class and I must say…I’m impressed!
We have not yet started our
E.L.A. workshop but we have been going through the motions of switching for small
group stations. The students are working very well together and I’m very proud
of how well they have assisted each other with the different activities.
This Week
This week we will be working on
more addition strategies, narrative writing, and creating our community
booklets. MAP testing will be this
coming Tuesday and Thursday. ELA MAP testing will be on Tuesday and Math will
be on Monday. I’m looking forward to another great week!!!
