Week 7 (September 29 - October 30)

Week 7 (September 29 – October 3)

“No parent can child-proof the world. A parent’s job is to world-proof the child”
~Doug Flanders
I love this quote because together we are doing exactly that…preparing the child for the world! As a team we are preparing the child to be a critical thinker, independent, and confident!

As you all know the month of October is breast cancer awareness month! We kicked off the month by wearing pink on October 1st and we have been collecting money all week to help support the finding of a cure! We have a container in our room to collect our money and many of the students have been donating both coins and dollars! Students are aware that the class that raises the most money gets a special prize, but with that we had the conversation about why we are raising money and it is NOT for the prize but because this is something that we believe in and want to fight for. It was such a beautiful conversation. We will be taking donations all week and would love your contributions as well!

Math
This week we continued to work on subtraction. The students are really making good use of the number line both on the wall and the floor to help them solve for the difference. I am pleased with how independent the students have been with thinking critically and using the manipulatives and other resources around them for help! They have also done a wonderful job of helping their classmates and sharing strategies that they have come up with.

Next week we will be moving away from Envisions and using the Engage NY series to explore sums and differences to 20. Here is the link to the Engage NY website if you are curious to know a little more about it:

Social Studies
Maps, maps & more maps! We have been discussing what maps are, what they are useful for, and what can they tell us. This week we mapped our homes and attempted to use some map features such as a key and a compass rose. We will continue using maps in the weeks to come. Next week we will be creating our own map of our own city. I’m interested to see where the kids’ imaginations take them!

ELA is always filled with so many things! In reading we are working on building our independent reading stamina and also looking for and trying new strategies to help with those difficult words that we often come to. In writing we’ve been working on complete and incomplete sentences but also with adding detail to our pieces. This week I plan to use some mentor pieces to help inspire the kids and also to show them what is possible in their writing. They are such great writers and my goal is to enhance what is already there!

Each Friday we have free write time outside in the picnic area, and the students love the time to write in the fresh air!

As always we are looking forward to another wonderful week filled with fun and engaging learning. DON’T forget about our fund raising for breast cancer awareness! If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact me!!
