February 16 – 20 (week 24)
Black History Month
We’ve
been discussing “black history” and “Black History Month” in class.
Surprisingly most of the students were unsure of what the words truly meant. We
discussed what we thought and then watched a small clip from the History
channel around the origins of black history. Afterwards we had a discussion on our
thoughts now that we had more information on the subject. The students being as
caring and concerned as they are, wanted to learn more about all of the black
Americans who have helped to shape this country. So now we’re getting to know
African Americans who are important to our history and our society through
research. We are looking to present our knowledge on Friday of this week.
Our class will
also be apart of Windsor’s Black History Month celebration on Friday February
27, 2015 at 8:45 am and 9:30 am in the cafeteria!! We hope that you will be
able to join in on our celebration.

Learning Through Math Games
We all
know the kids and I love to play math games and they are quite affective in
helping them practice and master the different mathematical skills. Most of the
games that we play in class require little materials and hardly any preparation.
Typically we use dice, playing cards, and scratch paper. Some of the games that
we play are dice jump, addition dice, subtraction cards, and trashcan. They can
be extremely beneficial, especially for those who may be struggling a little. I
encourage you to play these games with your kids at home for practice and also
for quality time. The kids really adore their parents and I’m sure they would
love to share their learning experiences with you.
Singing With Reason
We
play music and sing along throughout the day. I’ve let the students choose
songs to add to our class playlist that I have downloaded on my phone. We’ve
talked about how we want to listen to music that will inspire us mentally,
academically, and emotionally. We listen to songs that build confidence in the
kids and that will inspire them to think critically about society and the
social injustices of the world. Some songs that we’ve been listening to include
Happy by Pharrell Williams, Lean On Me by
Bill Withers, Don’t Worry Be Happy by Bobby McFerrin, Man in the Mirror by
Michael Jackson, Redemption Song Bob Marley, and Tennessee by Arrested
Development!!! We have a playlist of 29 songs and it is still growing!
On
Friday we enjoyed singing Man in the
Mirror and Lean on Me with Ms.
Layman’s class. The kids are happy to know that they have someone in the
building to share their love of music and singing with!
We are
looking forward to another great week in 604 and remember we would love to have
you all come in and share our learning experiences with us!!
