Week 6

Finalizing the 6 Regions
This week we finally finished up our 6 regions project! They turned out great! The kids really put in a lot of hard work and time to complete these projects. It was interesting to see the regions isolated and then put together to create the state of SC. Some things that they noticed were that some of the rivers connected and some didn’t. We discussed what could have caused some of these things as well. You can find our finished product outside of our classroom. I noticed that some of the kids were sharing our SC Regions map with you all as you waited for your parent/teacher/student conference. The other 3rd grade students are infatuated with the map and have been coming up to the kids as recess to ask about it! I’m proud of their ability to articulate everything that they’ve learned over these past few weeks about the regions.

Reading with Purpose
We all know that our kids love to read, and I’m so grateful that they do. Reading is so important and it’s so good for the mind, but also for the emotions. We’ve had conversations based on “why do you read”. At first I heard a lot of responses along the lines of: becoming smarter, learning new words, and to read better. After I explained to them that I wasn’t looking for a certain answer and that I wanted to know their personal opinion of why they liked to read, I heard a lot more genuine answers: to escape to another world, to go on adventures, to laugh, and to be someone else.

To better help them to understand themselves as readers, I believe that it was important for them to understand someone else as a reader. Their homework for this week was to interview a parent or adult at home to see whom that person was as a reader (what books do they like to read, where do they like to read, when’s the last time they read, etc.)! The kids were so excited to share their interviews with the class and found lots of similarities amongst their parents. =)

As we’re beginning to adventure into our own writing of books, I figured that we could use some mentor texts to help us understand how different authors help the reader to understand their story plot and different author’s techniques. They were allowed to pick any picture book that appealed to their small group and dive into it! I’m excited to see what they notice as we continue next week.

Another fun and purposeful activity we’re starting, or rather starting up again, is our student read aloud. Each day a kid from the class will share a read aloud with our class. This will benefit the kids by building their confidence for being in front of an audience, give them a chance to practice their listening skills and their reading skills, expose them to new books that they might have never considered, and finally it allows them to see their peers as mentors and encourage them to go to their classmates for advice or techniques in reading!

A Habitat Visual
We have not officially plunged into our habitat unit; however, we have begun to think of some things we would like to learn within this unit. They kids used their chrome books, textbooks, and picture books to explore different habitats. It was their job to create a visual of the habitat they had picked and to include 3 interesting things that they noticed about the habitat and include 1 question that they had or something they wanted to learn about. They presented these to the class and found out lots of cool new things about each habitat. We will begin looking a little more closely at each habitat next week.

Spelling and Word Recognition
I know that many of you are concerned about your child’s spelling. I want you all to know that we are working on it!! I am not assigning spelling words on a whole class or small group level. However, we have been looking on word patterns and word recognition to help us improve our spelling! Please, do not fret! Spelling is not as important as having the techniques or skills to figure out spelling.

Book Buddies
What another fantastic Friday of book buddies! The kids read with their book buddies and even shared some of their reading strategies with their new friends. We are looking forward to working with our book buddies again next Friday! =)

Week 5

What a fun, energetic, and cooperative week we’ve had. Filled with songs, dancing, and collaborating.

“Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest; heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.”
- Author Unknown –

As you all know, we LOOOOOOVE to play music sporadically throughout our day. I’ve found that it lightens the mood of the classroom and even helps the kids stay on task. Plus it’s just plain ole fun!

So we just recently found out that “Watch me (Whip/Nae Nae)” is now on GoNoodle and needless to say the kids are OBSESSED with it and want to play it every day (very unlikely)! It’s been interesting to watch them do it and to watch them coach some of the other kids on the “correct” way to do this dance!

We also did shared reading with the lyrics to “Vivir Mi Vida” by Marc Antony! We looked at some of the word patterns and discussed how authors and songwriters show pauses in writing. Lucky for us we were able to look at this song in both English and Spanish as we had Stephany and Zaria translate for us! We’ve also added it to our class playlist!!

“The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathermatics.”
- Paul Halmos –

We’ve been working a lot on word problems as we continue our journey to master multiplication! Words problems are the hardest part for the kids, but we are going to continue to work on it and I’m going to continue to give them word problems to help better develop their conceptual understanding.

“There is no friend as loyal as a book.”
- Ernest Hemingway –

We’ll we’ve got the best of both worlds: books and friends! Many of the kids have found friends within the books that they’ve been reading. This week the kids wrote letters to their favorite characters. I noticed that a lot of the kids had questions for these characters. This week I believe we’ll make time to have the conversation of why the authors are leaving us with these questions.

Speaking of friends, we made 16 new friends when we started our weekly book buddy gathering with Mrs. Luchsinger’s class. It was so wonderful to watch these 3rd graders and 1st graders reading together, talking about their favorite books and getting to know one another! I’m very excited to see the growth in both their reading and their relationships with one another!

As you all know, parent/teacher conferences are coming up! If you haven’t signed up for one, please contact me! I’m looking forward to chatting about the progress our kidos are making!

Week 4

“Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody”
–Kid President-

We’ve had a fantastic, but short week! I’m impressed and so happy to see our kids continuing to strengthen the bond of our classroom! They’re extremely nice and complimenting to one another! It always melts my heart to see them cheering on one another and picking each other up when they are down.

A Little Tiny Visitor
This week Samaria decided to bring in her pet hermit crab to share with the class. During morning meeting she wrote in the science journal “Did you know that hermit crabs have a hard outer shell and they have a small claw and a big claw?” She gave everyone a chance to take a close look at him and she even let him out of his little home to roam around a bit! This little guy or girl stayed with us the entire day and was a wonderful addition to our classroom!

Math
I do believe our kids have mastered the idea of turning arrays into repeated addition and multiplication sentences and vice versa. I’m so proud of the progress they’ve made. We will be having an assessment on Tuesday to wrap this thing up so that we can move on to adding to our multiplication and division concepts.

SC the Great
Our SC Regions projects are coming along greatly! The kids have been working extremely hard and although it has taken us a lot longer than expected, it has been worth it!  The kids have been doing a great job working together, researching their regions, and displaying their information to later present. We are looking to present our regions to the class this Thursday.

We are looking forward to yet another great week in rom 304. Remember, visitors are ALWAYS welcomed with open arms!
