What a busy and fantastic week we've had! The kids have really been engaged in their learning and taking responsibility for their own activities. I can't even begin to express how impressed and proud I am of them! They are truly growing up to be little responsible adults.
Natural Disaster
The kids have been working diligently on their natural disaster projects. Their projects include landslides, volcanic eruptions, floods, forest fires, and Earthquake. The independent research they did, the presentations they created, the skits they created, and videos they found were amazing! We really have some hard working and creative kids!!!
Last Stop on Market Street
Mrs. Griggs came across a book entitled Last Stop on Market Street and she said she immediately thought of our class (which says a lot in itself)!
In the story...
"Every Sunday after church, CJ and his grandma ride the bus across town. But today, CJ wonders why they don't own a car like his friend Colby. Why doesn’t he have an iPod like the boys on the bus?"
We always enjoy Mrs. Griggs coming to read to our class! She is such a fantastic reader and the kids enjoy spending time with their former 1st grade teacher! After she read, the kids took some time to reflect and write about what the book meant to them, what stood out to them, what they enjoyed that the writer did and what emotions they were feeling. I was surprised by some of their responses! =)
Charades
As you all know, WE LOVE GAMES!!!!! Games are so much fun and we are able to learn and practice our knowledge in a fun way!! In order to help the kids practice their word recognition (especially those double vowels) and also to help them with their vocabulary skills, we've created a new game....CHARADES!! It pretty much works the same way as the store bought game. However, we've created our own words to include in our game. These words were chosen as a result of our current curriculum! The kids are allowed to describe the words, but are not allowed to act them out! The kids love the game and enjoy competing against their friends!
We had over 90% of the class participate in Reading with the Gamecocks this time around! The big winner of the school was our very own Isabel Thomas! She read over 2,000 pages! She has shown us what is possible with our reading!! =)
