Week 11
(October 27 – 31)
This
past week was a very interesting and “out of the ordinary” with Even Red Ribbon
Week and CoGat testing! However, we still made room for some fun academic
activities.
Math
We
have been working on measurement in math and using measurement to add and
subtract. The kids have been doing a phenomenal job. We even made our own cm
rulers. This week we will be using inches, meter sticks, and yard sticks and
discussing why we may choose to use a different measuring tools to assist in
measuring different objects or lengths.
ELA
As
a class we are still focusing on how we can grow our writer to better help our
audience understand it! I do believe that we are progressing greatly. As you
may have heard we finally finished Star Girl!! It was such an amazing stories
that sparked so many great conversations around being yourself, fitting in,
being kind, loving yourself, as well as many other topics. The kids made so
many connections to the story! It was such an amazing journey of reading Star
Girl! Our next read aloud will be Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes!
This too is a great read and I’m the students will appreciate the cultural
differences and so many more great conversations will take place.
Science
What’s
the Matter with Matter? Well that’s what we will be on a journey to find out in
the next few weeks. We will be looking at matter a little more closely and
doing some investigations to find out more about the properties of the different
states of matter.
Red Ribbon week
Many
of the students had no idea what Red Ribbon Week was outside of the fact that
they were allowed to dress up! We had a long and eye opening talk on what
exactly a “drug” is and why it can be harmful to our bodies! After the kids had
an understanding of what drugs, they were giving the opportunity to pledge to
“keep their hands off drugs”! It was optional, but they all promised to keep
their hands off! Our pledge is hanging on our door hanging for everyone to see!
We Pink We Can
The
walk was a great success and all of the children enjoyed themselves while doing
so for a good cause! Our class walked around chanting “Stomping out Cancer”!
I’m not sure which one of them started the chant, but it was beautiful to hear!
I’m
looking forward to our 4-day week, this week! And cannot wait to see the
kid-os!
