Week 13 (November 10 - 14)

Week 13 (November 10 – 14)

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
Dr. Seuss

As we’ve been talking about our IB unit of “How the World Works” many of the students are becoming naturally curious about how the world truly work. Many of our read alouds and activities have caused the students to inquire about cultures outside of their own, war, peace, and poverty. The students are naturally curious about what goes on around them and what they can do to help. After listening to the song “Together We Can Change the World” the kids engaged in some beautiful conversations on what we could do to change the world from our classroom. There was much talk about cleaning up our playground and the homeless. I stopped to think to myself how amazing it is that at such a young age they could care so much. We are looking forward to starting some classroom projects to explore and engage in activities to help change our world as best we can.

Here are some of the ideas that the kids came up with...

WE Care
With Veteran’s Day this week we shared the experiences we have had with soldiers and what it means to be a soldier. Many of the students have someone in their life that has been, or is currently in the armed forces. We discussed the importance of soldiers and why we should be thankful. Afterwards students wrote letters to the soldiers and we mailed them off. We hope to hear back from a few. (Keep your fingers crossed!!)

We also showed Ms. Luchsinger’s kindergarten class that we appreciate the hard work they put into studying and creating their communities. We went for a walk through of their communities, and learned a great deal about what was important to their community. It was such a nice experience!!

Wrapping up Measurement

As we finished our unit on measurement, we engaged in one final project where students traced and chose the measurement of their choice to measure individuals in our classroom. It was such a fun activity, especially viewing the final products. I’m sure that everyone walking through our hallway will enjoy our mathematical artwork.

I’m looking forward to another great week as we continue to our IB unit of How the World Works! I’m excited to see where our conversation will lead this week.
