Week
16 (December 8 – 12)
It has been another busy week
for us in 604! We’ve been doing a lot of investigating, publishing, and
practicing.
Science
This week we spent
some time mucking around with magnets and forces of motions. The students had a
great time playing around with different materials such as magnetic boards,
magnets, and inclines. They wrote down observations and questions that they
had. We are planning to investigate these questions this week.
Writing
The past few weeks
we have been working our way through the authoring cycle or writing process.
The kids started off with an idea for a book that they wanted to write. Now
we’re been growing those ideas and editing in order create a published
masterpiece.
Reading
As you all know I
value reading so much! I have such a strong long for reading and I want my
students to be able to experience that love for reading as well. We always
dedicate 15 to 20 minutes out of our schedules for reading. This week we also
dedicated some time to buddy reading. The students enjoyed having time to read
with their friends and share their favorite books or books that they were
currently reading. It was a beautiful sight to watch how enthused they were
about sharing their reading experiences.
Math
Place value has been
a breeze for almost everyone! We are continuing our place value journey and
moving on to place value in the 1,000s! The kids love using the base 10 blocks
to demonstrate their understanding of place value. I have to admit, the base 10
blocks can be quite fun to use!
Helping
the Homeless
Our collection is
still growing! We have over 60 pieces of candies, 11 socks, 15 mittens and gloves,
and many more items. Mr. John Dawkins, from transitions came to speak with the
students and provided a realistic view of what being homeless meant and the
ways in which we can help. I believe that his presence and conversation with
the kids helped to disprove many stereotypes that they had about the homeless.
Here students are tallying up our collection...!
Mr. Dawkins from Transitions of Columbia....!
I’m looking forward
to a wonderful final week with lots of engaging learning!
