Week 17 (December 15 - 19)

Week 17 (December 15 – 19)

What an eventful last week we had!!! With the field study to EdVenture on Tuesday, Concept Day on Wednesday, our helping the homeless presentation on Thursday, and also our Winter Wonderland celebration on Friday, we haven’t had time to rest! However, I will say that the students did a great job with each of our activities and they all gave 100%!

EdVenture
Needless to say the field study to EdVenture was exciting, entertaining, and engaging. The kids had such a great time exploring the museum. They were able to explore farm life and see how that transferred to grocery stores. They were also able to explore dental work, human bones, a fire truck, magnets, matter, and let’s not forget Big Eddie. I believe that Big Eddie was everyone’s favorite part!!

Our field study would not have been as successful as it was without the help of our 3 lovely chaperones: Mr. Rodriguez, Mr. Simmons, and Mrs. Thomas!

Concept Day
On Wednesday the second graders got to experience concept day for the first time. We spend the whole day rotating to each of the other second grade classrooms where the students were able to engage in a different activity around magnets and forces in motion. This was such a wonderful experience for the kids. It provided them with a different setting for learning and also a different teacher. I must say that the day went by smoothly and the kids were able to apply what they had learned in our classroom to activities that were planned out for them.

Helping the Homeless
I am beyond proud of the hard work and heart that our kids put into their helping the homeless service-learning project. From the very beginning they have been looking for ways to help both inside the classroom and from their home. It’s amazing how much love and compassion one child’s heart can hold. Wouldn’t it be amazing if all adults were the same?

We were able to present our Helping the Homeless experiences and newly found knowledge to all of the second graders, Mrs. Palmatier’s 1st grade class, some of the faculty and staff, and even a few parents were able to make it. It was a heart-warming experience to watch them speak on what they’ve learned and how they want to encourage others to help as well.

Winter Wonderland Celebration
On Friday I decided to host a surprise festivity day for the kids. The theme was “Winter Wonderland” and all of our activities were set around that idea. We spent the first part of our morning reading aloud our published books, which were phenomenal. The second half of the morning we made snow paint and created some beautiful illustrations. We discussed how each of our materials was in a different state of matter and we predicted what our final state of matter would be. We also incorporated some “minute to win it games” into our morning as well. After lunch we had read aloud and then watched a silent movie entitled The Silent Snowman. Samaria’s mother and grandmother brought in some birthday treats as we watched the movie. Finally we watched our “Helping the Homeless” presentation from the previous day. I had the kids reflect on what they thought they did really well on and what they thought they could improve on for our next presentation.

I hope that you all enjoy your long Winter break and I cannot wait to see you all back in the New Year!!!
