Week 10
Growing as writers through Reading
We have some amazing authors in our
classroom; authors and illustrators of many different genres. Although the kids
have become fantastic authors, there is always room for growth. We’ve been
studying the author Patricia Polacco, who has written a number of great stories
such as Thundercake, Thank you Mr.
Falker, Chicken Sunday, The Art of Miss Chew, Pink and Say, and many more!
We’ve been reading her books with the eye of both a reader and a writer to
notice some of the author’s crafts that she uses in hopes of trying them in our
own writing. We created a list of “Patricia Polacco Appreciations” that we
noticed in her books. Each day the kids pick a different craft to try in their
own writing! As the kids try out the different crafts they are able to get a
feel of what they do and do not like. I’ve been conferencing with the kids in
order to see what crafts they’ve been trying and also to see what I can also do
to help them grow as writers!
Time
We previously worked with time in 2nd
grade! This week we have been looking at time a little more closely! We’ve been
looking at time as a constant measure, different type of clocks, the passing of
time, and how time can help us in our every day life. The kids love working
with the little Judy Clocks and telling time in general. We will continue working
with time. Please be sure to practice the skills involved with telling time at
home with your child! =)
We’ve also been playing lots of math movement
games such as dice jump, math race, and math jump to get the kids moving around
and also to help with their fluency!
We’re looking forward to our first full week with
no interruptions or substitutes this week! Remember our classroom door is
always open and we welcome our visitors with open arms. If you have any questions,
comments, or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me!
