Curious
About Severe Weather
Since we first started our unit on weather the kids
have been asking questions about the different types of extreme weather. The
daily forecast, water cycle, and temperature peaked the interest of most, but
the class was way more concerned about tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms,
blizzards, and floods! So I let them spend a week researching in a group the
weather phenomena of their choosing.
The kids ended up putting together presentations
that they showcased to the class. The presentations ended up not being up to
part and so I gave them more time to prepare. They presented again for our
class along with Ms. Layman’s class. The second time around it turned out to be
quite informative and they took pride in presenting their findings to a larger
group.
Questions
For Book Club
Book clubs have been absolutely fantastic!!! The
kids are enjoying their books and more importantly they are enjoying sharing
their thoughts, feelings, and questions with their group! They’ve had so much
to talk about and so many connections that they have made. It is such a
beautiful thing to watch unfold.
Speaking of reading, as you all know we’ve been
reading Stella by Starlight for our read aloud and there are some race
issues and question to go along with it throughout the story. The setting is
set in 1932’s South Carolina. There are so many questions that the kids have
and most of them are “why”! They are starting to make connections between the
book and also the issues that have been in the news lately. There is so much
that they want to discuss. I can only answer so many questions for them and I
do not want to impose my beliefs on them and so I have encouraged them to go
home and share their questions, comments, and concerns with their parents. So
please don’t be surprised if your child comes home asking questions in regards
to race, racism, the KKK, or any other organization.
Celebrating
our mothers
I don’t know if many of you know it, but I am
extremely close to my family, especially my mama. I love my daddy dearly, but
there is nothing like a mother’s love! I wanted to make sure that we took time
out of our busy schedules to show our mothers of room 604 how much we love and
appreciate them. The students and I planted flowers and wrote letters to show
our appreciations. It was such a fun and heartfelt experience!
